1000 Defendants Convicted on Human-Smuggling Charges
May 04, 2009
Milestone Reflects County Attorney's Commitment to Enforcing Immigration Laws
1,000 defendants have been convicted of violating Arizona's human-smuggling law in Maricopa County. This law, the first of its kind in the nation, has allowed the prosecution of human smugglers and illegal immigrants who conspire with them.
For years, powerful special-interest groups have pressured this office to back off these prosecutions. We've stood our ground, and now we're seeing the results of our hard work. From 2006 to the present, 1,000 defendants have been convicted in Maricopa County of violating the human-smuggling statute, A.R.S. οΎ§ 13-2319. Of those, 132 were convicted of human smuggling and 868 were convicted of conspiring with the smugglers. The 1000th defendant pleaded guilty on April 17, 2009. The Special Crimes Bureau of the County Attorney's Office handles the cases.
While it may be politically incorrect to point this out, the strong enforcement of state immigration laws in Maricopa County is driving down our crime rates. I thank Sheriff Joe Arpaio for his staunch support of these efforts and his leadership in fully enforcing Arizona's immigration laws.
Since the County Attorney's Office began filing these cases in 2006, political leaders and lawyers supportive of the rights of illegal immigrants have sued in multiple courts to block the prosecutions. The County Attorney's Office has won all of these legal challenges to date. These include a ruling on July 17, 2008, by the Arizona Court of Appeals, which upheld my interpretation of the human smuggling law, and most recently a ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Broomfield on January 13, 2009, which dismissed another lawsuit challenging these prosecutions.
